The Challenge: Trust and Fraud Prevention
Robocalling has become a big problem in the United States, with tens of billions of unwanted calls generated yearly. According to a survey conducted by Consumer Reports in 2018, 70% of U.S. consumers say they won’t answer the phone if they don’t recognize the phone number. Robocallers are using a multitude of tactics, including Caller ID spoofing, to convince the recipient to pick up the phone.
Robocallers are getting smarter in how they overcome the technical solutions meant to stop them. For example, a simple Caller ID blacklist process can be circumvented by switching to a new Caller ID. This process also affects the legitimate owner of the Caller ID, which was spoofed.
The netnumber Solution
Communication Service Providers (CSPs), ILECs, CLECs and VoIP providers can enhance the user experience of their customers, build trust and reduce fraud risk by implementing the Number Risk service, which accurately provides insight into the current scam call risk of calling numbers for North America. This is powered by advanced algorithms that determine for each call if it has the potential to be fraudulent and, if so, label it as “scam possible” or “scam likely.” The subscribers receiving such a call can then decide to answer it or not.
netnumber has partnered with First Orion, a market leader in call identification services, to deliver best-in-class fraudulent call detection. Number Risk is a registry on fraudulent activities of calling numbers provided as a query service. Voice call platforms query calling numbers and retrieve the currently associated scam risk information. The incoming call can consequently be reported, blocked, or terminated.
Number Risk informs and protects phone subscribers from robocalls and fraud.
Key Features
Comprehensive Data
Number Risk is powered by a rich data set and advanced algorithms in order to predict the likelihood of fraud for each individual call.
Real-Time Threat Detection
The data feed used by Number Risk is updated every six minutes, so it reflects the call patterns in real-time. This brings a huge advantage when compared to static or after-the-fact call analysis.
Lightning-Fast Service
With the First Orion data source, stored in our data centers close to the customers’ location in AWS or even on customer premises, Number Risk is capable of the fastest response times in the industry.
Robocall and Wangiri Detection
CSPs using either TITAN or another core network routing deployment can integrate the Number Risk data for the purpose of implementing processing rules for calls above a certain scam risk score.
Flexible Deployment
Number Risk can be deployed as a cloud service, in AWS or on-premises.
Fully Redundant – Managed Service
netnumber operates a fully redundant service which is managed 24×7. This ensures that you will receive carrier-grade service availability and performance all the time.
Use Cases
Presenting the Number Risk Information
netnumber is enabling CSPs to display scam risk information to their subscribers. The Caller ID of each incoming phone call is looked up in the Scam Risk Registry. If a match is found, the corresponding information, “Scam Possible” or “Scam Likely,” is shown on the display of the device used by the call recipient. With this solution in place, ILEC, CLEC, VoIP providers and other voice providers can effectively flag or block calls with fraudulent Caller IDs.
Fraud Prevention
Risk scoring of telephone numbers is essential for fraud prevention purposes. Different data points give useful information about the risk associated with certain actions, for example, a service sign-up attempt or a financial transaction. With Number Risk, fraud prevention algorithms can attach a higher risk to phone numbers that have been recently involved in scam calls.
